Part 2: Your Identity

When asked who you are, you may respond with your name, age, or occupation. For example, I am Mikaela Clifford, 16, college student. While there’s nothing wrong with starting a conversation off with your name and age, that’s not who you are. Before anything else, you are a child of God, called to be a servant to Jesus Christ. A label so powerful that nothing can be above it. However, the main way the enemy will attack God’s people (all people) is by confusing us to put a sinful identity before our godly one.

In Acts, the story of Saul’s conversion takes place. Saul, who had Roman citizenship but was Jewish, went on to become a Pharisee and someone who killed Christians. One day, as he was on his way to murder more people, he had an encounter with Jesus that left him blind for three days. Immediately after, he changed his name to Paul and became a servant for the Lord. Paul went on to be one of the best warriors for Christ and evangelized thousands of lives while God did extraordinary things through him (Acts 19:11).

Satan distorted Saul's identity! Instead of him living in purpose and evangelizing Christians, he was killing God’s people. We can see the same pattern today in the world: people are identifying as so many things, yet many of them can’t be backed by truth. The enemy confuses by making you think your identity is anything rooted outside of the Bible. This confusion causes us to misinterpret God’s nature and live in sin. Take heart, though; it’s never too late. Saul martyred hundreds of Christians, but Paul transformed thousands of lives and was a servant of the Lord for the rest of his days. All in all, the enemy will confuse God’s people by distorting their identity; however, when we encounter God, our identity is clarified in Him.
