What the Hevel?

The book of Ecclesiastes starts with a bold claim: "Everything is meaningless." The author, traditionally believed to be Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, grapples with the idea that no matter how much wisdom you gain or how many books you read, the future remains unpredictable. Despite our best efforts, it can feel like all our knowledge and actions are in vain because we can't change the story God has already written.

It's easy to get caught up in worries about things we can't control—whether it's our purpose, safety, or even what’s for breakfast. Ecclesiastes tells us that such worries are insignificant, especially if we don't know God. Ultimately, we all share the same fate: death. Ecclesiastes 3:20 says, "All go to the same place; all come from dust and to dust all return." The challenges we face today will eventually fade, but how we live our lives matters deeply. Whether we stress over things we can't change or trust God to guide us, that choice defines us.

This perspective might seem a bit heavy, the idea that you can’t alter your predetermined story. But here's the comforting part: you do know the Author of your story! Life might be full of uncertainties and fears, but we have confidence in the One who holds tomorrow. Even when the world seems chaotic and destructive, God’s plan remains unshakable. Whether your life feels like it's falling apart or you're thriving, knowing that God reigns supreme can bring you peace that transcends all understanding. Life may be fleeting and many things may seem futile, but God is always King.
